History
The path follows Hadrian's Wall, the Roman defensive wall built in AD 122 across the width of northern England, now part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site. It is the only National Trail to follow a World Heritage Site from coast to coast.
It opened in May 2003 as the 15th National Trail, running from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway. It is open all year, but for conservation reasons walkers are encouraged to come between April and October.
It is managed by the Northumberland National Park Authority on behalf of the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail Partnership, which is funded by Natural England.
