Adventure On Foot

About Adventure On Foot

The UK has thousands of named walking routes, looked after by national bodies, councils, charities and volunteers, and written up in a dozen different places. We bring them together in The Directory: one numbering system, and for every route its facts, its history and a map.

Adventure On Foot is a small, independent project run from the UK. Alongside The Directory is a logbook: tick off the sections you’ve walked and watch your record fill in.

Not a recording app

We don’t record walks or give directions. Use whatever you already use on the hill (OS Maps, Komoot, Strava, a paper map) and come back afterwards to tick off what you walked.

The honour system

Ticking a section is your word that you walked it. Nobody checks, and nothing needs proving: it’s a record of your own walking, not a competition. Tick a section if you walked it. Your call.

Our codes

Every route has a code of ours, such as UK 001 for the Pennine Way or UK 007.02 for a section of the South West Coast Path. The codes are ours, not an official system, and anyone is welcome to use them. They’re provisional while the numbering is finalised. How the numbering works, and every code given so far is in the registry.

Where the routes come from

Every route here exists because someone created it, waymarks it, maps it or writes it up. We don’t replace their work: we bring it together, credit it, and link back to it.

Route lines come from OpenStreetMap, except the England Coast Path, which is drawn from Natural England’s official line. Heights come from OS Terrain 50 (Ordnance Survey) and, in Northern Ireland, OSNI. Photos come from Wikimedia Commons, each credited where it’s shown. The map style is OpenTopoMap.

How we check routes

We check each route against its publisher’s own page: the national body, council, charity or trail association that looks after it. A route’s page says what we found:

  • Checked: it names the publisher’s page we checked it against, and when.
  • Listed by the LDWA: we found it in the Long Distance Walkers Association’s register but no page from its own publisher, so its details may be out of date.
  • Unconfirmed: we looked for its publisher and couldn’t confirm it. It stays listed, flagged, so treat the details with care.
  • Not yet checked: its name and line come from OpenStreetMap, and we haven’t got to it yet.

Histories and facts come only from sources, and each page shows them. Where something isn’t known yet, the page says so rather than guessing.

Something wrong or missing?

Every route and section page, and The Directory, has a Propose an update button at the foot. Tell us what’s wrong and, if you can, a link that shows it. We read every suggestion and check it against a source before changing anything.

Privacy

We keep what your logbook needs, sell nothing, and use no ads or tracking. The privacy notice has the detail.
