Adventure On FootSearch

Where the data comes from

Every field in The Directory, where it comes from and how you can use it. The registry, its releases and the API are free to use under the Open Database Licence.

Much of the registry is built from OpenStreetMap, so it shares OpenStreetMap’s licence. You can copy it, build on it and share it, including commercially, as long as you credit “© OpenStreetMap contributors; Adventure On Foot” and share anything you build from the data itself under the same licence. A map or a page that only uses the data, rather than a database made from it, just needs the credit.

Ours

  • Codes: Our numbering (how it works). Not an official system. Part of the registry, under the Open Database Licence.
  • Sections: Where we break a route into stages: the trail body's own stages where it has them, otherwise ours. Part of the registry, under the Open Database Licence.
  • Checks: Whether a route's publisher still promotes it, the page we checked and the date. Part of the registry, under the Open Database Licence.
  • Difficulty and walking time: Worked out from the line and the heights, the same way for every route. Part of the registry, under the Open Database Licence.
  • Histories: Written by us from the sources each page lists. © Adventure On Foot, not under the Open Database Licence and not in the registry or the API.

From OpenStreetMap

  • Route lines: OpenStreetMap's walking route relations, joined into one line per route and section. Open Database Licence.
  • Names, ends and managing bodies: OpenStreetMap's tags, corrected from the publisher where our check found them wrong. Open Database Licence.
  • Lengths measured from the map: Measured along our line where the publisher gives no length. Open Database Licence.
  • Stations, bus stops and car parks: OpenStreetMap, within 1 km of each section's ends. Open Database Licence.
  • Place names: OpenStreetMap's towns, villages and hamlets. Open Database Licence.

From public bodies

  • Official lines: Natural England's line for the England Coast Path and the Peddars Way's western arm; Forestry England, Forestry and Land Scotland and Natural Resources Wales for walks OpenStreetMap lacks. Open Government Licence.
  • Heights: Environment Agency, Welsh Government and Scottish Government LIDAR; OS Terrain 50 (Ordnance Survey) where LIDAR doesn't reach; the OSNI 50 m DTM in Northern Ireland. Open Government Licence.
  • Regions and counties: OS Boundary-Line and OSNI's county boundaries. Open Government Licence.

From each route's publisher

  • Published lengths, starts and statuses: The publisher's own page, named on the route's page with the date we read it. Facts only: we never copy their wording, maps or files. Facts, credited and linked to the publisher.

From others

  • Photos: Wikimedia Commons, most of them Geograph's. Each is credited where it's shown. The photo's own licence (CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC0 or public domain). Not in the registry.
  • The map: OpenTopoMap’s style, served by Top-O-Map. CC BY-SA.

What we feed back

Where our checks find a gap or a mistake in OpenStreetMap, we report it to its mappers rather than fixing it only here. Something wrong here? Every page has a Propose an update button.
