History
The story of salterns, sea monsters and saving the day is one of the first six Story Trails made by Hampshire County Council. The council's Story Trails page of February 2011 says it enlisted professional storytellers from Orange Apples to create the six stories, on easy-access circular paths of around a mile, funded by the Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, and lists a story event at Lymington-Keyhaven Nature Reserve on Sunday 27 March 2011. The story is set in 1832, among workers harvesting salt from the sea, and brings in a sea monster and a band of smugglers. The council's page describes the industry behind it: salt was made at Keyhaven by impounding seawater in shallow lagoons called salterns, then using wind pumps to draw the brine into large metal pans, where it was heated until only the salt remained.
