History
The Romans and Reivers Route was started by British Horse Society Scotland and taken forward as part of the South of Scotland Countryside Trails project, led by the Southern Uplands Partnership. Solway Heritage set up the Dumfries and Galloway side (Ae to Craik Roman signal station) and Vyv Wood-Gee the Borders side, and successive sections were launched in 2005.
It runs from Ae Forest to Hawick along old Roman roads, forest tracks, drove roads and quiet lanes. The name refers to the Border Reivers, cattle raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th to the early 17th century.
The route is now managed by Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Borders Council.
