History
The River Ayr Way was officially opened in 2006 by the broadcaster Fred Macaulay, and is described as Scotland's first official source-to-sea long-distance path. It follows the River Ayr from its source at Glenbuck Loch to the sea at Ayr.
It was developed through the Coalfield Access Project, a £2.5 million programme to improve access to the countryside in the former mining areas of Ayrshire. Scotland's Great Trails lists East Ayrshire Leisure as the trail manager.
