History
The route was first suggested by Gloucestershire Ramblers, among them Tony Drake and Cyril Trenfield. Gloucestershire County Council launched it in Footpath Week in May 1970, using only existing rights of way.
It was inaugurated as a National Trail on 24 May 2007, by which time several new rights of way had been created. It runs along the Cotswold escarpment from Chipping Campden to Bath.
The Cotswolds National Landscape looks after the trail in partnership with the Cotswold Way Association, set up in 2016, and Cotswold Voluntary Wardens patrol it.
