History
The idea goes back to the 1930s, when the Teesside Ramblers' Association pressed for a long-distance path in north-east Yorkshire. In 1953 the National Parks Commission put a formal proposal for the route to the North Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Alec Falconer, a founder member of Middlesbrough Rambling Club, was instrumental in its development, which took around 16 years to plan. The trail was launched with a ceremony at Helmsley Castle on 24 May 1969, the second National Trail to open in England and Wales.
It runs from Helmsley to Filey Brigg.
