History
The Arichonan Township Trail leads from the Gleann a' Ghealbhain car park through larch woods to the ruins of Arichonan, the largest and most important of a group of five townships in the area. The Campbells of Auchenbreck feued its lands in 1654 to Neil MacNeil from South Knapdale, and by 1802 the estate had passed to the Malcolms of Poltalloch. In September 1848 Neil Malcolm ordered the tenants out, to replace their small farms with a large sheep run managed by the estate; four people from Arichonan were arrested for resisting and imprisoned at Inveraray, and shepherds lived there afterwards. Forestry and Land Scotland says many of the buildings are still in remarkable condition, and Canmore's record of the scheduled monument notes well-preserved cruck couples, a winnowing barn with a lintel dated 1833, and a house remodelled as a shepherd's cottage with a sheepfold that was still roofed in 1898.
